Why everyone cares about us being in the world cup:
* It is the most played sport in the world and as a sports loving nation we pride ourselves on kicking everyone's arses at all kinds of sports. For such a widely supported sport we've never got even close to doing well in soccer but now we've set the stage at least for improvement.
* Whilst I personally don't care about the A-league I'd like to see it properly supported and not risk losing a domestic league for the sport. Qualifying helps that immensely.
* So many people have tried so hard over the last two decades to get us there and it's good to finally see them rewarded with Australia qualifying.
* We were the underdogs. Everyone loves an underdog.
* One of the most important points is that we beat Uruguay. What a bunch of arrogant sods. They deserved everything they got after playing for penalty shootouts all night.

So, that's a number of good reasons to jump on the bandwagon I say. There's more no doubt but that's what I thought of now. I also realise I'm going to get crap for posting this at 9am. But you get that, I have my reasons.

I totally agree ... y do people suddenly care? Notice how none of ur reasons r actually grounded in soccer or in any way soccer related. You've said :
1. we love our sport
2. ... (sorry .. I totally missed this point...so moving right along... )
3. we tried hard
4. we suck
5. but Uruguay suck more

my disclaimer for this comment : I only slept 4.5 hours last night

Okay some comments on your post.

First my reply to your summary of my points:
1. Well done, this is the best summary you did. It's all downhill from here.
2. It's not that hard to follow. Qualifying in the world cup helps domestic soccer here which has been in a whole heap of trouble of late. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough for those with no soccer knowledge or who read the poor man's paper.
3. You don't think it's nice to see when a whole heap of people finally get rewarded for their efforts after many years?
4. Being the underdogs does not equal sucking. Think about it for a while. I'm sure you'll figure it out.
5. I didn't actually say Uruguay sucked at soccer, I attacked their character and their tactics.

How can you say that none of those reasons are related to soccer? What are you looking for? A change in the rules to make the game more intersting and suddenly people like it more.

People are excited about soccer because soccer in this country has been taken to the next level for the first time in ages and people are proud of the achievements of their fellow countrymen.

If you still are unconvinced then I hope that you never cheer for an Australian (or other nation I suppose anonymous) when they are swimming at the olympics if you never watch any other swim meets. Cause I mean, why are you excited about swimming all of a sudden? Give me a reason grounded in swimming. This applies to many other situations and I doubt that you can say you are without hypocrisy here.

In summary, Jeff i'm sorry for ranting on your blog and anonymous I'd love to continue the debate if you still disagree and Jeff doesn't mind.

P.S. If you're not from UNSW and don't know me please don't take what I say too seriously.

Ppl care because they have seen and experienced the heartache that has preceded this. For example, I have followed this since the 98 campaign where we lost to Iran on the away goals rule. We all support our national team because we feel we have a connection to them.

And so what if ppl jump on to this success? It is our patriotism that makes many "bandwagon" jumpers interested.

Let me ask any of you this, why do you support a European football team (eg. one from la Liga or EPL)?
Because you like the colours of the jersey? or Beckham's hairstyle? or someone told you they were cool? or even the way they play? This is all trivial. You have a less legitimate reason to support any of these teams since you have no connection. This is in comparison to the pride in one's home town or country.

Paul

ps. Though the TAB and betfair.com give me a reason to follow.

Paul here is on the money. Except for the fact that the world cup qualifier versus Iran was in 1997, but we won't let that worry us.

The game itself was in 97 but you still call it the World Cup 98 campaign...

I stand corrected, Paul was just plain on the money then.
