Schoolgirl commits suicide in middle of exam

In tomorrow's SMH :

A Hong Kong schoolgirl ran out of an exam she was sitting and jumped three storeys to her death, police said today.

Lo King-yee, 17, was midway through the examination when she ran out and clambered over the railings of a school corridor to commit suicide yesterday afternoon.

An ambulance crew raced to the scene at St Stephen's College in Hong Kong's Stanley district and declared her dead shortly after 3.30pm, a police spokesman said.

Seventeen Hong Kong students have committed suicide in the current academic year compared to just 12 in the previous school year.

Some sociologists say Hong Kong's rising youth suicide rate is partly due to excessive pressure to succeed on school children as well as a lack of communication between parents and their kids.

And this is where I'll be having my last exam tomorrow. You think anyone is crazy enough to run out of TELE3013 and jump to their death?

There's only one David Beckham...

...And that was one of the worse penalty kicks I've seen in my life. England deserved to get knocked out =P

Deja Vu

Yet another stuff up today. TELE4352 exam reminded me of the mid-session where I wrote alot of stuff down but still ended up getting a pretty low mark. Perhaps it'll be the same again and I just scrape pass the course...*sigh*

TV viewing session starts in 10 mins so I'll keep it short. In the next two hours SBS is showing 'Late Night Poker' and a chinese Jackie Chan movie called 'The Protector' which from reading reviews online is like a 80s version of 'The Rush Hour'. Can't wait.

Who's barbaric?

Why is the world so violent? The start of news bulletins these days is about people getting killed/conflict in the Middle East region and today was no different. I woke up this morning (or midday) to hear a South Korean man beheaded in Iraq by militants. And the guy was not even fighting in the 'War against Terrorism'. On the other side of the world, George W. Bush dressed up, puts on a face for the cameras and said something we're so accustomed to hearing since 9/11: "The free world cannot be intimidated by the brutal actions of these barbaric people". So the actions by the non 'barbaric' soldiers in Iraq aren't 'brutal'?

Osama bin Laden is no better. The arsehole is shit scared to show his face and is the Middle East equivalent of Bush only slightly 'smarter'.

Cram Cram Cram

ELEC3006 exam in 12 hours and I'm still learning new stuff. I'm only comfortable with 2 topics out of 6 so I guess I'll be repeating this subject again in next year. However, I'm not gonna fail without putting a half decent effort so no sleep tonight. I've been eating to help stay up but there's ONLY so much your stomach can handle. I quote from Fight Club:
Marla Singer: "If I fall asleep, I'm done for."

How to waste time when you should be studying: Tip #1233

Complete the Yetisports World Tour 2004

This series of 5 flash games will no doubt distract you from the exams you are cramming for. The animation is cute, it has a mad sound track and it is also available off-line. So even people using dial-up should have no excuses not to play. Many thanks to Brad for telling me about it. Now my chances of passing have just nose-dived even more.

Also from Brad is this cool Windows XP calculator he made. Some people have too much time on their hands though it is quite impressive. Get it here.

Wake up Jeff

Yesterday morning at 9:45 when I was to meet up with people at uni library to study-
Nancy: 'Jeff, where are you?'
Me: 'Still in bed.'

This morning at 11:45 when I was to meet up with people at Macquarie Uni library to study-
Jane: 'Hey, where are you?'
Me: 'Still in bed, you just woke me up'

And I have an 9am exam tomorrow...Shit

See you at the crossroads...

I have more interest reading Joshua Harris' book I Kissed Dating Goodbye than Steve Furber's ARM System-On-Chip Architecture. I absorbed more reading A Sneaking Suspicion by John Dickson than David Griffiths' Introduction to Electrodynamics. I've asked my sister more questions about Christianity in the past month than I've asked my lecturers about circuit theory in two and a half years of uni.

Turning 21 later this year I find myself at the crossroads. Why am I here? Where do I want to go from here? For the first time in my life, faith is really starting to appeal to me...

Always Coca Cola...

Chop away the hands of the ones at the back and they'd look like actual coke bottles =)

In other unrelated news, I'm officially up shit creek for this semester. The thought of having to repeat one of Noosh's subjects (I learnt my lesson from ELEC1041) meant I've spent WAY too much time on ELEC2041 and not much on others. Today I went to Macquarie Uni library to start studying PHYS2939 (exam next Monday) and I'm as clueless now as I was 8 hours ago. All I did was sleep >_<

Euro 2004 and Badgers

Euro 2004 have just kicked off and it's half-time in the opening game between Greece and Portgual with Greece leading 1-0. Hmmm....will this turn out like the France-Senegal game in World Cup 2002? If only I have Pay-TV to find out. I want my FOXTEL!!

It seems badger badger badger has caught on Euro 2004 fever too. Check it out here. I personally think it was created to make England supporters feel better. Watch it to see what I mean =) Here are some screenshots:

Super Size Me

Morgan Spurlock is insane. The guy who has eaten over 19000 Big Macs so far in his life is insane. Morgan spewing up a super-sized Maccas meal is funny. A large portion of Americans are insane.

Beer glorious beer

Studying at the uni library now with Jonno and Jane. Well not quite. I'm just staring at the lecture notes but not absorbing much. Jane has gone off to ring up companies that may sponsor her church fete and Jonno is studying after a power-nap that went too long....The room is also extremely tiny to study in comfort so this little break now is rather refreshing(I'm actually standing under the fan as I type). With 8 days to go till the first exam, I'm seriously in alot of strife =(

ELSOC BBQ was excellent. After missing the previous two because of lab (must take the BBQs into consideration when enrolling next session), I was like a little kid let loose in a chocolate store. I had about 6 sausage sizzles (long snags too albeit a bit burnt!) and pinched 4 bottles of beer from the beverage pool. I also received my certificate for the peer mentoring program during the summer holidays. Overall, a very satisfying 2 hours =)

Okies, back to 'studying' now...

Viridian Room

ARRRGGHHHH!! I'm about to chuck a computer rage because of this addictive flash game!! After successfully negotiating my way out of Crimson Room, Viridian Room is proving to be a much harder nut to crack. I'm one item short of collecting everything and even after that, I have absolutely no idea what to do. Place the CD into the case? Light the incense sticks?

*think...you are an engineer...*

Funny signs

As seen on an assignment cover sheet:

While I may have benefited from discussion with other people, I certify that this homework submission itself is entirely my own work, except where appropriately documented acknowledgements are included.

Well it's funny to me anyway since I don't recall doing any assignments this session. Either way, thanks to all who helped this session. You know who you are.

The power of ...bread

I bought buns from that chinese bread shop at the bottom of Sussex St after ELEC3006 lab tonight. Caught a train home and just like last Thursday, dozed off around Strathfield, missed my stop (West Ryde) and ended up getting off at Eastwood. My sister used the car so I couldn't ask for a lift home and had to wait for a train back to West Ryde. Added an extra 45mins to the trip. Seriously, what do they put in those bread that makes me so sleepy every time I eat them?

Late night poker on SBS

Why only one pretty chick in the 7-player quarter final?
Why did three guys wear sunnies in a room that was not well lit?
Why did those same three guys bomb out so early?
Why did the pretty chick have to smoke? (her hand was trembling everytime a close-up was shown)
What are the odds of two guys getting the same full-house?
What was Tony Bloom thinking when he folded a straight (5,6,7,8,9) against the pretty chick's pair of Aces? (that was the turning point of the game if you ask me)
What was Tony Bloom thinking when he went all in? (bad move)
How did 'Top Hat', who looked the least of the three that remained to win ended up going straight to the final?

Nerd for an hour

Continuing the 'spur of the moment' theme. Only Mitch and I rocked up to ELEC3006 lecture tonight and we decided to sit at the front of the lecture hall. YES, for the first time since 1st year, I sat in the front row for a lecture. It's like going to the cinemas - you have to tilt your head back to read what is on the projector screen. Also, the lecturer does look like Quentin Tarantino as pointed out by Russ. That said, I still did not learn anything and actually nodded to sleep before Mitch gave me a nudge and whispered: "Nerds don't drift off to sleep"
